Auto Parts: sunroof leak, advance auto parts, auto parts dealer

Question
Hi,
My friend has a leaky sunroof.  It also refuses to open.  It has power.  It tries very hard to open.  Someone suggested filling the edges with urethane and be done with it.  He cannot afford a costly repair.  Could dirt just be lodging it shut?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Power sunroof assemblies are simple to remove from the vehicle which is where you would need it to be in order to fix it. After removing the plastic trim around the tops of the windshield and doors (inside), the headliner will usually just fall out of place and reveal the mounting screws for the glass and track assembly. Once removed you will have access to the track pieces that are typically hidden and will be able to see why the assembly is not moving. At that point you will probably have access to replace the seal which should be relatively inexpensive at your local new auto parts dealer like AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, Parts America, NAPA, Big-A, etc. Installation is the reverse.

My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
