Auto Parts: 83-84 toyota p/u automatic overdrive, automatic overdrive, engine temp

Question
I have an late model 83 or 84 Toyota p/u 213,000 miles runs excellent when i first got the truck the overdrive worked good in the automatic transmission.  This is the model with the pull switch on the dash.  I have tried everything to make it work tested relays and solenoids everything tested good.  Recently i read that there is a engine temp. sensor that controls the overdrive i have looked through repair manuals, Mitchell on demand,  can't seen to locate this sensor.  Not having access to a Toyota shop manual i have turned to the experts for help.  any info you can offer would be greatly appreciated.. thank you   Shane

Answer
Hi Shane,

That vehicle may be a tad old to have the temperature retarder installed. If your vehicle has an on-board computer however, it may retard the OD from engaging while the engine is still cold. Yours may only use one temp sensor though for double-duty. The sensor should be located in the intake manifold near the water outlet-to-radiator gooseneck or on it.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
