Auto Parts: 1993 GM Truck motor/ecm compatability, gm truck, computer id

Question
QUESTION: According to the used parts sites I have been to, the computer
ID #'s for the ecm for the 4.3 is the same as for the 5.0.
Can a 305 be put in using the existing ecm?
1993 GMC K1500 4x4 with engine code "w"

ANSWER: Hi Eric,

Matching service number computers will interchange. If just pulling an ECM from a 5.0 and putting it into a vehicle with a 4.3 and the numbers don't match, chances are the unit will not operate that application. Certain ECM's are interchangeably, not all of them.

QUESTION: So, if the ecm's are compatible, is there any other controllers I should be worried about changing from the 4.3 to the 5.0?

Answer
Hi Eric,

No. If the service numbers are the same, then the PROM should also be compatible with the components in your vehicle. The PROM ID may be different, but the programming will be the same and any module that the ECM does not control or recognize will be deactivated and won't cause any undesired operation.
