Auto Parts: 95 pontaic sunfire brake problem, brake rotors, rear brakes

Question
the car that i have is a 1995 Pontiac unfired & every time i step on the brakes it seems like the right rear is locking up it leaves skid marks on dirt roads on that side.
the front brake rotors and brakes are new and the brake drums on the back are still good as well as the brakes.im thinking of changing the abs unit under the hood.what do you think

Answer
Hi Adam,

Before you go replacing expensive electrical components, remove the drum and take a look at what's going on in there. the startwheel adjuster may be bad and causing the brake shoes to grab. The proportioning valve may be sticking too, which would cause the rear brakes to engage sooner than the fronts. The wheel cylinder may be bad and causing the shoes to stick when returning and that will cause the rear brakes, or brake to grab as soon as the pedal is pushed.

Remove the wheel and drum, work the wheel cylinder back and forth inside the cylinder to make sure it is moving smoothly. Adjust the starwheel DOWN so the shoes are not touching the drum. Make sure there are no rivets showing on the shoes and that all the springs are intact as well as not rusted together.

I'd bet my next pay check that your problem does NOT involve a bad ABS pump or assembly but rather, a single wheel.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
