Auto Parts: 97 pontiac sunfire will not start, crankshaft position sensor, pontiac sunfire


Question
97 sunfire with 2.2 will not start, it will crank, it's getting fuel, checked to see if injecters pulsing they are.
also getting spark but the car will not start & doesnt sound like it wants to. Also when i was driving it, it stalled & wouldnt restart i picked up codes po342 & po172 one is camshaft & other is rich fuel problem  PLEASE HELP

Hi Greg,

Sounds like a bad CPS (Camshaft/Crankshaft Position Sensor). Naw, I'm just kidding, actually, let's hope it IS the sensor because that's easier than replacing the cylinder head or the block because the timing chain jumped which is the more common problem with them 2.2L engines. Check it with a compression gage when cold and observe the readings. If all readings are low, bad timing, if one or two are low, probably a bad head gasket or stuck valve.
