Auto Parts: transmission, ford taurus, 2004 ford taurus

i was just wondering, why do some cars, like the 2000-2004 ford taurus lx have the transmision shifter on the steering column and the other trims lines have it on the console?  and which is more reliable/less likely to break down? i like the lx because i have more room on the console to sit a third person, if need be.

Different option packages. Both are about as reliable as each other.
