Auto Parts: the correct way to read a multi-meter, digital meter, misunderstanding

Question
thank you for your time, i just took a ohm's reading on a alt. and the it seemed to to be out of range. in the over haul man. it states that the readings should be taking with the meter at the lowest setting(or ohmsx1)with reading to fall within .42ohm+- 15%. the new multi-meter i have starts at 200ohm. the reading i got was .9(digital meter). am i right to divde by 2? becuase of the new meters higher setting or am i missing somthing? it's been awhile for me to use the meter for chasing shorts and i forgot? thanks again.

Answer
Hi Darrick,

I'd think regardless of the device setting, the reading should be accurate. In '200' mode, the reading is not being doubled, just the scale is. I could be misunderstanding, but I would trust the reading, NOT the scale that it's being displayed on. Best thing to do is get something you KNOW the value of, like a single 8ohm speaker, test the speaker and see what the reading is on that scale and if it says 16 or 4, then I'd have to say that something is off.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
