Auto Parts: Brake Lights, auto parts dealer, aa auto

Question
My wife came home this morning and when I left I noticed her brake lights were still on. We have a 2002 Ford Explorer the battery has went dead. Can anyone help I at work so I will have to tell her over the phone.

Answer
Hi Gilford,

I'd say buy a Chevy, but that's not going to help you now.

Sounds to me like your brake-light activator has broken. You can purchase this part relatively inexpensively at almost ANY local NEW auto parts dealer like Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Big-A, NAPA, AA-Auto, Western Auto, Wheels, etc.

The piece mounts onto the brake pedal and is activated when the brake is depressed. My suggestion would be that if you have never changed one of these before, to take it to someone who CAN! Not only are they nearly impossible to access, but they need to be calibrated so the light is off when the brake is not being used.

My advice on finding a new technician is: Steer clear of 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
