Auto Parts: 96 Ford explorer, engine rack, rack pinion

Question
I have a 96 ford explorer AWD and from what I was told the Rack went bad. I don't know exactly what that is but it has caused the power steering to go out on the vehicle. I was wondering if you know how much that would cost to be replaced.

Answer
Hi Jay,
The steering rack & pinion assembly is what converts the turns you input through the steering wheel to the linkages controlling the front wheels left and right movement via a power assist which is the pump attached to the front of the engine. Rack & pinion assemblies are typically only attached to the firewall, or frame in your case, by four mounting bolts through rubberized bushings however, they are not usually easy to access. If you are planning on doing the replacement or have a technician in mind I have a good tested assembly I can ship you for $100.00 which includes freight and a 30-day warranty. You can contact me via our phone number listed on our website (www.knucklebusters.us) if you are interested in purchasing.
Thanks for the question, I hope this information helps you.
