Auto Parts: check engine light and light next to it, chevy cavalier, coolant temperature

Question
the check engine light has been on for awhile now and i just got new brakes and wires replaced and it was off for a little bit and now it wont go off. also today a light next to it came on it was a box with a arrow through it and a swiggle line at the bottom. i dont know much about cars but i do know that my chevy cavalier 2001 is about to get drove off a clif. also there is a high pitch noise coming from the engine when i start it and a squeaking noise from the passenger front tire area.

Answer
if your car still runs decent the engine light is more than likely on because your oxygen sensor(s) are bad. from what you discribed about the other light i think it is your coolant temperature light. this would be a bad light to have on. you need to get it checked right away. the noise sounds like the belt or maybe even a pulley both of which you should have changed no questions asked. don't drive your car off a cliff either not only is that bad for the environment it is a waste of a perfectly good little car. give it to me before you do that.
