Sorry to bother you again but I need to clarify my previous question: If the alarm on the vehicle is going of, can you still put the vehicle in gear and drive it away? My husband and I are having a 'discussion' on this. I say, it makes no sense to have a vehicle alarm if you can still put the vehicle in gear and drive it away. My husband says, 'yes' you can put a vehicle in gear and drive it with the alarm going off...(which anyone who would do this isn't too swift!) The vehicle in question is an older dodge van (around 1998/2000) that has a factory horn-beeping alarm. Thanks again.
AnswerIt actually has 2 system intertwined with the ignition
and the door locks through the BCM. (body control module)
It's called a Single wire, resisted negative trigger door lock/
security and transponder fuel injection overide trigger system
or SKIM for short.
So yes, you may not be able to take the gear switch out of
position if the alarm and transponder system have both
been triggered. You ma'am are a bit more correct on this then
hubby because the past has shown criminals will attempt to
jimmie the ignition once in the vehicle, but in his corner,
this does not always apply depending on the type of security
breech the system "perceives" is
happening. It's a matter of degrees on the SKIM system.
If the door is jimmied for instance, but the OEM
ignition key is in the vehicle and can be used to start it,
it will, and the horn honking would stop.
But if the thief were to advance to damaging the ignition switch
to try to start it WITHOUT the proper coded transponder key,
no start and ignition wheel lockdown.
So you are both right on this.
