Car Alarms: Alarm does not work, 2004 toyota 4runner, beep sound

Question
I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner Sport Editiion and I bought it used this year. I'm pretty sure it has the factory alarm. When I first got it the lock for the drivers door did not lock or unlock when the button on the door was pressed or when the button on the keychain was pressed nor did the one beep sound when locking the car. After about 2 weeks the one beep sounded when locking and the driver door started locking and unlocking without manually puting the key in the door. I decided to test the alarm at this time so I locked the car and armed it with the keychain but had the window down. After armed I reached in and manually unlocked the one door by twisting the rocker above the handle. Absoultely nothing happened and I was able to open the door with no problem. This leaves me feeling very uneasy. Any suggestions?
