Car Alarms: Alarm prevents starting, gm passlock, gm vehicle

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 Chevy S-10 with an alarm system (don't know, but guessing it is factory).  For a few months now occasionally I will attempt to start it, and alarm will go off, prevent starting.  I usually can shut off the alarm, wait a few minutes, and it will have resolved itself.  However yesterday I tried starting, there was power everywhere (lights, radio etc) then when I cranked, no power to starter, alarm went off when I removed key.  I waited and got the same response.  I have check all the fuses, disconnected the power trying to reset the computer, and left it sit for 24hrs.  Still wont crank, alarm goes off.  Please help.

ANSWER: Ok, this GM vehicle also has the
GM PASSLOCK 2 fuel rail disable system,
and it would affect the starter.

Passlock Engagement Symptoms:

The dash security light would be on, the engine would crank,
even might turn over, then die off. Like the fuel pump or,
the injection system would not "catch" and start the engine.

If you did the research, then I'm sure you are aware this
is a common issue with this year Passlock 2 system and the
part in the ignition switch tumbler that communicates with
the passlock circuit tends to ware down over time with use.

It was a badly designed system to begin with, and now yours is
now 10 + years old. :>(

That is your likely trouble.
However, it's also fixable at www.GMPASSLOCK.com .

See the PLJX bypass kit. As long as you can start
the engine most of the time, you need just the 69.95 kit.

If it won't start now, you need the PLJX kit with 2 relays
and sockets for 84.95. The relays and proper resistor
will allow you to start the engine everytime with the
key, but if left that way, will drain the battery within
2 days. Each relay pulls 30 amps. So you would then
use the PLJX kit (which requires RPM rate to program)
overlay the wiring over the relay work according
to the direction we supply, and then once the PLJX is programmed
and set, remove the relays and resistor and you are done.

That is the way to circumvent Passlock 2 if this is
the situation you are experiencing.

If it's the after market alarm you spoke of,
the starter would not turn over at all.
That's if the system also was installed with a starter interupt
relay inline. It would not even attempt to crank. Nada.

Which one sounds like your issue?

QUESTION: It does not even crank, nothing, then when I pull the key, the alarm goes off.

ANSWER: That's because the fuel rail has shut down.

There is no siren so it's unlikely you have
anything in there after market.

QUESTION: There is a siren, the siren sounds when I remove the key.  The starter itself does not engage, nothing, then I remove the key and the alarm sounds.

Answer
You'll need to set off the alarm for a few seconds.
Then, look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode to see if this was corrected.

But if it does work, I'd keep it this way, and
replace the alarm asap with one you know and
understand how it operates for the best overall
experience.

Let me know if it works for yours.
