Car Alarms: 1997 Rav4 alarm, toyota rav4, side foot

Question
I recently bought a 1997 Toyota Rav4 with an alarm/immobilizer system.  We have 1 remote keychain & 1 door/ ignition key.  The alarm re-arms itself automatically after turning off the ignition – sometimes even before all of the doors are closed.  Recently we could not get the remote to work.  I have searched the web and believe that this is a TDS system – there is an LED on the left dash and an on/off toggle on the driver’s side foot well outboard wall a few inches off the floor.  Is there a way to turn off/disable the alarm?  It is a nuisance, and I would rather just use the door key and/or power lock buttons.  I’d really like to remove the whole thing but I can’t find any instructions or diagrams for it.
