Car Alarms: 1980 Corvette parking lights flashing problem, rear boot, auto responder

Question
I have a friend that has a 1980 Corvette with an after market  pursuit alarm installed. He did not get any remotes with it when he purchased the car, so it is really an unused alarm.  He had a problem with the rear boot for the convertible top not releasing. While working on it I noticed that every time I pushed the button to release the rear boot the parking lights flashed for a period of time and then stopped. (I think this is a saftey feature as the driver could be on a roadside putting the top up). After I fixed the problem we went for a ride.  As I was following him, I noticed that the parking lights were continually flashing as we drove.  Do you have any idea if this is a feature of the after market alarm or the factory alarm. The after market alarm has a red light on the dash that is always blinking in a constant on-off sequence that looks to be about 1 second on, and 1 second off.  There is a small toggle switch on the drivers side under the dash, but it doesn't seem to do anything.  What is it suppose to do?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  My thought would be to try and completely disconnect the after market system to see if it stops the flashing.
