Car Alarms: 1998 Montero alarm problem, flip switch, responce

Question
My battery in my 1998 montero keeps dying. My local mechanic says that something is draining 1.2 amps when the car is off. He says he traced it back to the alarm system but is not sure how to fix it. I bought the car used and the previous owner does not know if it is a factory alarm. I do no have a key fob. I have had problems with the alarm. There is no sound and the lights will go on and off for no reason when the car is parked. There is a red button to the right of steering column that I will need to press to start the car when this happens. I am trying to avoid the expense of going to the dealer. I really don't want the alarm. Can I disable it, how do I do it and will it fix the problem. Thank you

repair starter
Hmmmm,
Make sure you do the procedure correctly.
Might have missed a step:

PUT IGNITION KEY IN IGNITION,
KEY ON TO JUST BEFORE CRANKING THE ENGINE.
PRESS IN AND HOLD VALET SWITCH
UNTIL YOU GET A RESPONCE
FROM THE ALARM.

KEY OFF.

This should toggle the alarm in and out of
valet/override.

If toggle type switch.
KEY ON, FLIP SWITCH, KEY OFF,
START THE CAR.

Then remove it if you like at this point.
But make sure they repar the starter kill relay inline.

I hope this solved it for you.
