Car Alarms: Car alarm keeps going off, negative battery cable, 2000 mercury cougar

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 2000 Mercury Cougar and this morning I woke up to my car alarm going off. I then realized that I left my keys in my pocket and they were washed. Now my car alarm keeps going off (I can make it stop by turning the car on) so now I unplugged the negative battery cable so it won't go off until I find a solution to the problem. The keys have the security chip thing (rubber thing on key) and a control thing attached by a key chain (not working).

ANSWER: Is there a siren involved? or the car horn?

QUESTION: I believe it is the siren. It continues to make noise for a little while then if i do not turn it off it will turn off by itself but either way it will start again within a minute.

Answer
Ok, should be fairly easy. To try to disarm it,
look under the dash area for a button or,
a toggle switch. When you locate it, turn on the
ignition key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.=VALET/OVERIDE

This stops the alarm except for the keyless
entry if installed. Once in Valet mode,
it will allow the car to start and operate
like there was no alarm at all.

That should solve the troubles for now.
Repeat the steps to toggle back to valet when
you aquire a new remote. See a site like
www.KEYNFOB.com to locate one.

Let me know what you discover.
