Car Alarms: car alarm goes off even after unlock is used, hyundai elantra, remote keyless entry

I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra. I do have an after market remote starter on the car and have been using it with great success for a little more than a year. Today, when I went out to start my car, the car alarm went off when I opened the door. Repeated attempts to unlock using remote keyless entry device results in same. Dealership no help, since it is an after market remote start. I called a local mechanic and he said it might be a dead battery. HELP>
