Car Alarms: 2003 Durango Immobilizer Bug, cold mornings, security light

Question
I have had this problem twice.  Both times on very cold mornings.  Car starts, runs (no warm up) for 5 minutes to drop off at kids school.  Shut car off, couple minutes later return to start car.  It starts but SECURITY light is flashing and it runs for seconds and shuts down.  Several repeats and eventually won't even turn over.  Both times my wife arrived about 20 minutes later with our second key which is a replacement so it is not factory but it is newer and ordered through the dealer. It works.  Later in the day the original key which was having the problems will start the car without incident.
1. Is it possible the chip on the original factory key is running low on juice so the newer key works better? Or is it more likely just a fluke or the passage of time that allows car to start with the newer key some time later.
2. Is the cold affecting it and would I be better advised to park in the garage and/or warm up and leave running?
3. Can I disable the factory alarm system and install an aftermarket system that is (a) more reliable and (b) I have more control over?

Thanks

Answer
OKEE DOKEE, 1 BY 1...

1. always keep batteries u to snuff.
2. if you have the option to park iside
a secured lot, then always.
3. yes, adding an aftermarket system to
control what the factroy system does and
adds more functionality would be advised.

Welcome.
