Car Alarms: Keyless entry remote, replacement remotes, joe cassidy

Question
I bought a 2001 Chrysler Intrepid SE and the car has the place on the front dash panel where the signal is received from the remote keyless remote and the light that flashes on it, however the car did not come with a remote. My questions are, is there any way to make sure that the car does have the remote keyless entry system in it and if I purchase a remote is there any way I can program it without taking it to a dealership or locksmith and if so, how. Thanks.
