Car Alarms: Alarm security problem, devil s advocate, keyless entry system

Question
I have a 98 Toyota corolla and the factory alarm is giving me problems, my car doesn't want to start half of the time because of the alarm's security system.  This is a factory alarm installed by Toyota: the horn is used instead of a siren.  Is there any way I can disconnect the alarm and have the security system disengaged?

Answer
This vehicle's OEM system is dependent on the door lock system as well. They are integrated.

In many Japanese vehicles,
the action of unlocking the doors, disarms the
"factory" alarm, as it would yours as well.

To disarm, normally, you would insert the key in
the drivers door, turn left, then right
to disarm and reset it. This action can also
be done by adding an after market remote
keyless entry system to the current door locks.
But that's the extent of it for the "factory" system.

However,

I am surprised that it stops the starter from cranking.
That's puzzling since there in no immobilizer circuit
in this car.

Let's just play devil's advocate here.
If the alarm was installed after market, they
may have used the car's horn as they're audible
source. It happens a lot at dealerships.
If this was the case, there would/should have
been a starter kill relay installed as well.
This sounds like your situation to me.

Do me a favor please?
Look under the dash area for a button or, a toggle
switch. When you locate it, turn on the ignition
key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.

At this point. the alarm would have reset.
If this had a starter kill relay installed,
it would now be opened, and the engine would
turn over when tried.

You would repeat these steps to go back to
user mode to see if this was corrected.

Let me know if it works for yours.
