Car Alarms: 96 chevy camaro factory alarm system, chevy camaro, alarmtek

Question
QUESTION: I recently bought a 96 Camaro that has the factory alarm system installed that i believe is going bad, i have one of the remotes to the system that will allow me to start the car but while I'm driving the dash lights start flashing along with the headlights. I would love to just disable the system however everything i have read on here says you have to use the door unlock button, that was great except my car doesn't have power locks. any suggestions?

ANSWER: Please tell me what you are experiencing.

I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
(doubtfull since none of the notes show this
car as having a factory alarm system)
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take, to help you to fix this
situation you're in quickly.

QUESTION: The car does have a LED on the dash that does flash along with the flashing headlights but oddly enough the horn does not blow. i checked the horn and it DOES work and there is a security light in the dash bored that lights up when the system is going off

Answer
It's an after market system
from your description.

To simply disarm it, locate and use the
valet/overide switch.

To start, look under the dash area for a button or,
a toggle switch. When you locate it, turn on the
ignition key, press and hold in the button (little
spring loaded micro button, red or black possibly)
until the alarm chirps 1 time. This should over ride
the system, and only the keyless entry part,
if installed, would still be operating.
The LED (light emiting diode) light in the dash
should also go on solid.=VALET/OVERIDE

This stops the alarm except for the keyless
entry if installed. The next step is to
either remove the alarm or, try to identify,
and get new remotes for it.

But once in Valet mode, it will allow the car
to start and operate like there was no
alarm at all. Repeat steps to put into user
mode.

Let me know how it goes.
