Car Alarms: VW 02 Passat anti-theft system problem, vw passat, vdub

Question
When I lock my VW Passat, thereby setting the anti-theft alarm, it is supposed to beep once and flash the turn signals once. Instead, it beeps once, then again about 2 seconds later. It continues to beep/flash, sporadically, every 15-30 seconds. Finally, after about half an hour, it stops, but the same thing happens every time I lock the car. I checked all the doors are closed securely and tried using the key in the drivers door rather than the remote, the same thing happens. Could it be just a problem with the battery or an electrical problem?

It seems to be reading something open,
somewhere. The "chirp back" denotes that
when it armed, it saw an open circuit powered
up, and reported it.

Check all lights, trunk included. If no
joy, run it into the local Vdub shop and
have them diagnose the issue. Should
not cost anything.
