Car Alarms: 99 MAZDA 626, mazda dealership, dash area

Question
Our 99 mazda 626 won,t start periodically and than it will just crank again do you think it may be the manufacturer alarm on the car? Someone suggested that . We actually had it towed and when it got to the shop it started it and drove for a for more weeks and this has happened a couple of times.

Answer
Sure, it can be the factory alarm. It is dependent
on the physical action of locking & unlocking the doors.

You should contact the service department at the
local Mazda dealership to see what the system in
this car is capable of, and more importantly,
how to disable it.

If it's an aftermarket alarm, there would
be a reset or valet switch under the dash area,
that would help you out. But you'd need to
tell me if there's an LED flashing in the dash
when that happens, and if a siren is sounding,
and the parking lights flashing at the same time
you can't start it, then it is indeed an
after market alarm. The next time this happens,
try the following:

Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, found under the
dash area, (push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it. However
you should start with Mazda to determine
what's what.

Good luck.
