Car Alarms: Chapman lock on 1992 Miata, car alarm system, release latch

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1992 Mazda Miata that I bought new. The dealer put a Chapman lock on for me. It's the type that pushes in to lock so the engine won't start and has a round key to twist and pull out to unlock. The lock is located under the dash.

I have had no problem with this system in 15 years.

Today I first tried to check the oil and could not get the hood up. I heard it release when I pulled the release latch but the hood would not raise up enough to unlatch. This was a problem a few years ago after neighbors sat on it for hours.

I then unlocked the Chapman lock and tried to start the car. It responded as if I still had the lock on.
Retrying the lock I found it pushes in very loosely, goes in with no resistance and when I pull it back out it wobbles.

From what I can see this company does not exist any longer.
Is this a problem because of age or could it have been tampered with? I have had the car broken into twice in the past year while in my driveway.

Do you suggest a locksmith or mechanic or dealer to repair it?
What should I replace it with?

Thanks in advance for your help
Marie

ANSWER: Yeah, going to have to go with it was damaged in
one of those burgleries. I appears that the elements
are broken. At this point your choices are
wide open. Personally, I would go with a good
car alarm system, with paging remotes.

But that's me.

Have a look around at what's available

QUESTION: Before I can have a new system put on, I have to be able to get this one started and get the hood to open. (do you know if these locks affect the hood?

What type of business should I call to get the lock opened/removed to take the first step? Locksmith? auto repair?

I don't have power windows or locks so not sure a remote is posible.
Thanks again,
Marie

Answer
First call is the stereo/car alarm shop.
Let them take it out. Ask if they have
an "on site" fee to get this car started,
and then you will shop with them to
re protect it. Usually works. and it's
only fair to let them go from there.

Then see what they suggest to protect it at
that point.
