Car Alarms: car alarm, oldsmobile bravada, 2000 oldsmobile bravada

Question
what is the name of the factory installed alarm system on my 2000 oldsmobile bravada

Answer
Well there is no real 'name' for the factory installed alarm system as the alarm is a function of the Body Contol Module which is an integral part of the vehicle.

If you are referring to the factory anti-theft system then it is known as PassLock II.  It operates similarly to the older GM system known as VATS that incorporated a resistor in the key that if the computer did not see would keep the vehicle from starting.  The VATS system had a tendency to go bad over time as the contacts that touched the resistor in the key would go bad, so GM moved that resistor into the ignition switch which increased reliability, retained the anti-theft abilities, and made a replacement key easier to obtain.
