Car Alarms: BMW Car Alarm, bmw alarm, alarmtek

Question
QUESTION: I have a factory BMW alarm in a 2000 740i and recently it has been going off for no apparant reason. It seems maybe whena car or someone walks by the car? Is there any way to adjust the sensitivity of this factory alarm?
ANSWER: Please tell me what you are experiencing.

I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Many veriables on this vehicle &
I Require a bit more imput please.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?

Let me know more on this to better
advise you on a course of action
to take, to help you to fix this
situation.

QUESTION: I am almost poitive it is a factory alarm. It is definitely flashing parking lights and a siren going off. I have not looked inside the car to see if an LED in the dash area is also on?

Answer
There are a couple of ways to look at this issue.
If it's the OEM FACTORY alarm (ie; horn honk, headlights),
then the factory remote would arm/disarm it when
the door is lock and unlocked by remote ONLY.
It most likely that this NOT your trouble
as the factory systems in these cars have a
less then 3 % failure rate.

Obviously, if indeed this is an OEM
(factory) system, then the BMW dearlership should look
into it at this point as each BMW has a code set up
that needs to be looked at for malfunctioning
and trouble shooting options. Better with BMers
to get it looked at by a BMer tech shop. True.

But in my mind, this one is an after market system,
& your 2nd option is probably going to apply.

From the second description, you Id'd it as such (siren).
If this IS an aftermarket alarm we are dealing with,
(parking lights flash, siren and an LED
blinking light in the dash), then try this....

...Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, usually found under the
dash area to the left of the knee,
(push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart
(Go to: www.vehiclewires.com)
for the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until safely removed.

Let me know what happens.
