Car Alarms: Security system for 2007 CR-V LX, viper 791xv, avital 4400

Question
I'm in the process of purchasing a 2007 CR-V LX and would like some advice
about a security system--specifically, what's effective but won't cost me an
arm and a leg.  Do you know anything about the Powerlock security system?
They claim that it will make the car impossible to start by thieves. The car has
an immobilizer as a standard feature, but it sounds like it can be bypassed
easily by someone who know what they're doing.

Thanks for the help!

Answer
OK, please take this as just my opinion and nothing more.  The transponder based anti-theft system is more than adequate to prevent a thief from hot wiring the car.  The vehicle can not be hot wired without having a transponder chip that is programmed to the vehicle, no exceptions.  If a thief is looking to steal the vehicle, it will be towed and no alarm system will prevent that.

With that being said, I would definitely recommend an upgraded security system for content protection.  However dealerships are notoriously expensive when it comes to add on security systems and accessories.  You can get a DEI made system installed that has all of the standard security features like impact sensor and remote start and includes a transmitter that offers 2-way communications with the vehicle installed for around $500.  These systems typically offer a much better range of features than what the dealership has to offer and substantially better operating distance.

Take a look into the Viper 791XV, or something similar like the Avital 4400.  I think that these would serve protecting the contents of the vehicle better than the factory system.  They even offer systems that operate up to 1-mile away with full 2-way communications for a little more money.
