Car Alarms: $500 2007 Civic Si kill chip nesc?, nesc, code key

Question
Hi,

I bought a '07 Civic Si coupe, and the dealer wanted to charge me over $500 for a "chip" that acts as a device that prevents the car from starting (already in the car; they said they use them to keep thefts down). Without knowing what this was, I declined, and they "removed" it. The car has a factory alarm, and I've been told by an independent Honda mechanic that the key has a chip in it that prevents theft. Was this dealer lying? Do you know what he was referring to if not?

Thanks,
Gary

Answer
Well, there is an immobilizer in the key and ignition
to prevent the starting of the vehicle without the right
code key. That being said, the cheapo underdash chip/key
add on was not only redundent, but was also marked up
50 times (or more), and was just a second layer of
security. Was just the dealer's idea of "candy".

You did the right thing at the dealership.
Enjoy and be happy!
