Car Alarms: Kia Sorento Alarm Problem, kia sorento, rodrique

Question
Robert,
The problem was not my rear dome light as my alarm is going off again since the weather turned cold again today. I called Kia where I purchased the car and after the guy checked the paperwork he told me the remote start was installed at the factory so therefore the alarm was too. I don't buy it since you as well as another alarm expert I took my car to today to explain my problem said it was aftermarket and he didn't even think Kia installed remote starts at the factory. The alarm tech I talked to said the problem could be in the "brain" or wiring but needs to get in and take a look. Maybe I should just tell Kia to remove the alarm completely and have new one installed as it is still under warranty. The last time I took it in they said they were going to have to get the wiring chart and study up on it. That scares me. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks so much for all your time in helping me!

I did what you said and it did not work. I turned the key to the right just before cranking as the alarm is going off and then pressed the override button under the dash within 5 seconds. The LED stopped flashing and the car chirped 3 times and stopped. I then closed the door and started the engine. I turned off the engine and opened the door and the alarm went off again. I also tried it again the same way, but not starting car just turning off key. I then started car up and turned off, opened door and alarm sounded. Thanks for all of your help so far...hope you can think of something else I can try.

-----Question-----
In answer to your question my car is doing the following when the alarm is going off: the horn is blowing as if someone is breaking into the car, the running lights are flashing(no headlights), tail lights are flashing, but no LED or alerts on the dash, just the dash itself is flashing from bright to dim.  I can turn it off by pressing the remote. I hope this helps. Thank you.

-----Question-----
I need to follow up on your answer with some info and another question. I was told that the alarm was an after market installed by the dealer. It is not factory installed. Would this change how to fix the problem. If there is not a way to correct this, is there a way to disable the alarm (horn blasts)without affecting the keyless entry and remote start functions as I would still like these to work. Thank you.

-----Question-----
My 2005 Sorento, purchased new, has been in the shop 4 times in the last year and the dealership can't seem to figure how to fix my alarm problem. When I turn off the ignition and exit the drivers door, the alarm goes off. It does it several times a day, but not every time, and is worse in cold weather. Could it be a problem related to static? Today the dealer replaced the EPS unit and still the alarm goes off. Other than that the alarm system works fine. I wanted to have the alarm disabled but they said then the horn wouldn't work. I hope you can figure this one out. Thank you.

Dana,
Ok, they won't tell you this part:

Normally, you would insert the key in
the drivers door, turn left, then right
to disarm and reset it. If yours is malfunctioning,
you can disable it for good by doing the following:

The FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE IS
ORANGE  (-) Located in the drivers door harness.

Once Located, splice into this wire with
a simular guage wire, and put it to
a solid chassis ground. This terminates
the alarm functions entirely. Done.

However, at this point, this car would be exceedingly
easy to steel, so I suggest you get an aftermarket
alarm system to protect it from here on in.

Have a good day.

Please tell me what you are experiencing.

I need to determine whether it's a factory alarm
issue or, if it's an aftermarket system you are
dealing with.

Many veriables on this vehicle &
I Require a bit more imput please.

Is it: Headlights flashing, car horn honking
and a worded SECURITY" light in the dash flashing?
Or,
is it: flashing parking lights,
an LED in the dash area, and a siren
going off?

A.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, found under the
dash area, (push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

That should do it.

Let me know what happens.

Answer
Interesting.
Ok, well I guess I would opt for Kia to repair replace
since it is warrantied. I mean, we can speculate
all day, but if they are willing, I'd say let them
try to fix it. If however they come back with "no,
we were mistaken, and it was installed at the dealer
and have no idea how to fix it." Then they can pay
for another aftermarket guy to inspect and repair it.

Let Kia do they're thing. Can't hurt, and it won't
cost anything but a bit of time.
