Car Alarms: Remote start, jeep grand cherokee, remote car starters

Question
Hi, I do not know a whole lot about remote car starters so I have a few questions for you. My first question is that is the Commando FM-870 a good set up? If not, what is a good but fairly inexpensive one (around 200$)? And my last question is that I am installing it in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee which already has keyless entry and an alarm system in it so would it work with the FM-870 I choose?

Answer
I am not very familiar with the Commando products.  But I have installed many different brands of starters/alarms and have only come across one brand that was bad.  The quality of the product is not nearly as important as the installation itself.  If you are doing the install yourself, just take your time, test all connections with a multimeter prior to connecting and solder all connections.

The 2001 Grand Cherokee can be a difficult vehicle without the right parts.  DEI makes a piece called the 455J that will do your alarm arm/disarm lock/unlock via the data bus.  If you do not use a data interface you will have to run wires into the driver's door and passenger front door to control the door locks.  The module is worth the price just in the time alone, not to mention the 4 relays required to wire in the doors.  If your truck has gray colored keys then you will also need to bypass the transponder for remote start.  If you have the gray keys then I would recommend using the JDL-PK from bypasskit.com, this piece allows both transponder bypass and all of the data interfacing required for door locks and alarm interfacing in one box.
