Car Alarms: 95 Camaro Vehicle Anti-Theft System, resistor value, remote keyless entry

Question
Is there anyway to reset the VATS on a 95 Carmaro.  The battery went dead, I replaced the battery now the car won't start. The lights all work and the security light flashes.  I unplugged the battery, and have locked the doors and unlocked the door from outside with the key.  None of this has worked.  There is no remote keyless entry.

Answer
I do not believe there is a way to reset VATS.  With the Passlock systems you can turn the ignition key to the on position for 10 minutes and the brain will relearn the resistor value.

Try cleaning the contacts on the resistor in the key.

If this does not help, maybe a bypass would be in order.  I do not recommend this as it disables the factory anti theft system, but sometimes it is the only answer short of replacing the ignition cylinder.  To bypass, Measure the resistance across the pellet in the key and get yourself resistors to match this value.  Pop down the dash panel under the steering column and locate the VATS wires, these are normally in an orange tube and are usually both white wires, or purple white and white/black.  Cut these wires and insert your resistor across these the two wires that head to the BCM, leaving the wires heading up the steering column disconnected.  Solder the resistor in place if you plan on leaving the VATS bypassed permanently.

I would recommend only temporarily bypassing the VATS to eliminate the possibility of the VATS being the problem and reestablishing the VATS system once you have made the necessary repairs to the vehicle.
