Car Alarms: remote starter for 2007 VW Passat Wagon, new passat, vw passat

Question
Want to have a remote starter installed on my 2007 VW Passat wagon.  They use those keys where the remote is also the key.  (Don't know if I can replace the whole thing with a remote starter function?)  That being said I will need to have a separate remote for the starter and don't need one that has an alarm or unlocks the doors..etc. I know little to nothing about brands, types...etc. Quality and reliability are #1

Thanks in advance,
Luke

Answer
To install a remote start in vehicles that use an intelligent key can be tricky.  I believe you will have to lose one of your transmitters to achieve remote start as the remote works as a transponder as well as a key.  I have not done the new Passat so I am not familiar with the car, but Audiovox lists the 2006 version of the car as being pretty straight forward requiring the use of a universal transponder bypass.

If you lived in the South Jersey area I know what shop to recommend, however not knowing where you live I would strongly suggest checking out DEI's website to locate a local dealer.  My preference is DEI branded product, although Audiovox makes very nice equipment, and Compustar has a very good reputation as well.  If you head over to http://www.directed.com/contact/locator.asp and enter your zip code in the box for Viper or Clifford they will link you to shops that are authorized to sell their flag ship lines.   As far as quality and reliability go, the installation of the product is the most important component.  Stick with an authorized dealer and you should have no problems.
