I just bought a Hyundai Tiburon 2000 car.  It came with an alarm.  The remote has the name prestige on it with a big black button a a little green button.  The big button locks and unlocks the doors.  The little one turns off the alarm when it is going off(sounding).  But, the alarm itself when the doors are locked with the remote either isn't activating, or isn't detecting touches to the car.  I turned on the engine and drove off and the alarm never sounded.  When I hold the bigger button for about 4-5 seconds, the alarm sounds, so I know it works.  How could I tell whether the alarm isn't arming/activating or if the sensors don't work?  Thanks for any help.

It appears as if your alarm was put into
a valet mode, or overide mode.

Ok, try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes off, and the siren chirps twice.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in oposite direction,
key off.)

This should reset the alarm. All installed features
or the alarm should now operate normally.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to valet mode.

That should do it.
If you want to remove it at this point,
take it to your neighborhood installer
for this, or buy the wiring chart for
the vehicle, and reverse engineer it wire
by wire, until it's safely removed.

If it does not work out this way, you will have
to replace the system with one you know how
to operate and what to expect.

Let me know what happens.

OK, I tried to do what you asked me.  I cannot find any switch or button anywhere near the dash or any of it.  Under the hood, I found a wire that appears to be connected to the horn of the alarm.  It has two cables(+/-).  It connects to some sort of clear plastic box about 1inch wide by 2inch tall by 1/2inch depth.  The box itself has a metal "extension" thing which is grounded to the firewall.  Also, it occurred to me that maybe by disconnecting the battery I could also reset the alarm that way.  Would that work?  Also, where else do you think the button you mentioned before could be at?  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Ok, probably a basic alarm that needs to be removed and
dumped. No way to control it's modes. Plus it will
false more then protect your car. Get rid of it.
Less headaches if you re install something you know
and can control if it malfunctions.

The clear box is a shock sensor and the (+) power lead to
the siren can be cut to disarm that.

But I STRONGLY suggest you get a replacement system
in a hurry and install it. Get a good one
with starter kill, cause this car is too easy
to steal with out it.

Good luck.
