Car Alarms: Troubleshooting Alarm Problem, side kick panel, automatic door locks

Question
Hopefully you can point me in the right direction, so I won't have to spend a lot of money on an old vehicle

I have a 1994 4Runner SR5 that I bought used for my daughter. Very clean, 135K miles, well maintained, new battery--but 10 years old. It had an aftermarket alarm on it when I bought it, which has recently stopped working. The rear automatic door locks quit working at the same time. I don't know how old the alarm is, or if the automatic door locks are original equipment. I don't have the truck manual, or the alarm paperwork.

When I push the electronic controller, the parking lights flash as they always have, the front doors lock, but the rear doors no longer lock. The alarm does not chirp, in fact I can't get it to make any noise no matter what I do. The car will not start unless I use the electronic control to open the doors, so that part is still working. My primary concern is that the alarm and rear door lock failure isn't a precursor to something else failing, leaving my daughter stranded because her truck won't start. But, I'd like to fix this myself if possible, or have it professionally fixed if it doesn't cost too much.

Any advice on what I could check out and try to fix myself would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this great service......

Answer
Hi Steve,
You'll be glad to know from the sounds of it,
your troubles are small ones. This appears to
be a Toyota child safety door lock issue. This
was built into this vehicle as a precaution to
keep kids safe, and unable to unlock the doors.

Trouble come in if the installer DID NOT address
this when the job was done. (likely)
Ok, not so bad really. There is another wire
other then the door lock and unlock in the drivers
side kick panel area (Child Safety Locks- RED/BLUE (-)
In 6 Pin Connector Above Fuse Block In Driver Kick Panel)
and will need to recieve the same ground pulse
that the unlock wire is providing, at the same time,
so that it is disabled as well, and will allow the
back door locks to unlock too.
Find this wire, and splice a wire
from the unlock wire off the alarm (this will be
attatched to the RED/YELLOW OR, BLUE/YELLOW
WIRE IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE KICK PANEL OF THE 4RUNNER).

Once done, the child safety door lock will be disarmed
at the same time you go to unlock. Also if you notice
in the drivers side, rear door, you will see a black
switch, most likely in the down position. This is the
manual toggle for the child safety system.
If it is down, or was ever put in the down position,
put it in the up position, and do the above action.

This will solve that issue. For starter disable, and
getting out of it, find and use the Valet/overide
switch & try this.
Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid, and the siren chirps once.
(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in opposite direction,
key off.)

This should reset the alarm.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable, armed mode.

That should do it.

Let me know if you sort all of this out.
It should correct the situation from what I can gleen
from your question.

Good luck.
