2000 Ford Explorer Sport. Factory Alarm. Alarm worked fine until recently. Seems like a setting got messed up. In order to turn over engine, I need to hit the "unlock" on the key ring remote. Ex: If I turn off engine and exit vehicle ( w/o locking door with key ring remote) I cannot start the car unless I hit the "unlock" on the keyring remote. Once I click unlock, I have about 60 seconds to start start - after that I have to hit unlock again. Any clue on what is wrong ? Also, once in a while, when I unlock it it signals 4 times. Thanks and appreciate any answer you provide. tom

Well, it does not sound like a Ford OEM alarm.
I would need to identify what system you have
there to advise on it It also seems that
the system was tripped and that it is still armed.

Tell me, does the car's horn go off and the headlights
flash? or does it have a siren and the parking lights
that flash?

Important so I can offer some help to fix
the trouble.

Thank you so much for replying .... I ( and I'm sure a host of others) appreciate your time and effort.

I regards to alarm, it may not be factory installed. Got it from dealer a assumed it was ... but then again  I shouldn't assume anything. I will need to check and see what goes off when alarm trips ... believe it is siren and parking lights but honestly do not remember offhand and vehicle is at train station. Is there an easy way to identify alarm system so I can tell you exaclty what make it is ? Will look when I return from work.

thanks again for replying ... look forward to hearing back from you.

I am thinking aftermarket, and the alarm
is trying to tell you that it was breached.

Let's try to
reset it genericly.

Ok, try this.
Copy this down:

Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, press and hold in the valet/overide
button, found under the dash area, usually
to the left leg area,
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area comes on solid.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle (on/off) type.
in this case, key on, flip switch in oposite direction,
key off.)

This should be valet. This overides
the starter kill relay in the alarm harness,
and returns the car back to disarmed mode.

The only thing that will work now on your system,
is the keyless entry if installed.

Just Repeat these steps to rearm/reset
your system.

That should do it. This procedure is SOP for most
aftermarket alarms and may just be what
transpired here. Try it &
let me know what happens later when
you get off the train.

Hi ! Under the steering column there is a little silver button thingy... a little smaller that the size of a dime. It has a tiny protruding shaft but haven't been able to push it in ... seems like end is broken but may be able to use a pen to push and hold it in. Will try that when I get back to vehicle. Would this be the Valet button you were talking about ?

thanks for your time and effort.

Answer
It sounds like it. They are spring loaded
so if the spring is gone,
then you would need to repair, replace it.
As a quick fix, unscrew this button/switch,
then you can clip off the broken end, ground one
of the wires to the body, and then when trying
to go into overide, instead of pushing in the button,
you would now touch the other wire to ground for
5 seconds, with the ignition key on, until
it goes into overide.

But then go get another switch.

Hope this helps.
