Car Alarms: Car Alarm for Trucks, toyota tacoma 4x4, viper line

Question
I just bought a 04 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and was really excited to get a lift kit and a sound system for my truck. Now that I have upgraded my baby a little, thoughts of it getting broken into, or scratched came into mind.

I have done some research on some alarm systems, but I have gone to like the Viper 791XV. I really like the fact that you can remote start, get notifications of what's happening to you truck/car, and the relatively high frequency to open, disable alarm, start, etc. Do you think this is a good system to put on a truck (pros and cons), or do you recommend something else?

Also, the fact that most car alarms are built for cars and not for trucks, would that make trucks more vulnerable? and what would you do with the trunk opening sensor part? And also, what is an ESP Ghost Switch?

I really appreciate the time and effort you're putting to help me out with my problem. Thanks!

Alex

Answer
The newer trucks are now coming with some protection
from most manufacturer, but not in the Tacoma yet.
I am not a big fan of overpaying,
and Viper is marked up 60%. They are fine products,
not my choice for this truck. I like either the
ULTRASTART 4255TL, or the GALAXY 5000 RSW. Both
have longer paging range, and the Galaxy comes with
2 3000 foot LCD remotes as opposed to 1 and 1 spare.

But if you are sold on the DEI (Viper) line, I
suggest you go to your local dealer, and price
out the whole project. It's not necessary to
empty the bank account to truely protect this truck
in style.

Oh, the esp goast switch is an overide on the outside
of the car I believe. And the trunk sensor wire is
not used on this application unless you put
in a pin switch on the tailgate, or add a motion
sensor, using this wire as a (-) trigger.

Bottom line, get what works well, and does what
you are asking it to do without trouble. From
experience, I am just not a fan of dealing with
the DEI dealership network. You are always going
to pay more for the experience. Just the way
they do business. And if you need assistance
with it, you will need to get that dealer to
warranty it. Good luck with that too. lol.

What ever you decide, just know this vehicle is
pretty easy to install in. Most novice installers
can get it all done in 3 to 4 hours.

Have a good one.
