Car Stereos: Bose audio system in 2003 Pathfinder, internal circuitry, licensed mechanic

Question
I turned off my engine, removed the key to exit the vehicle and the radio continued to play.  I tried to turn it off manually, change stations, change modes, etc. and it would not shut off.

I checked the plunger switch on the door and it was functioning
properly.  I pulled the fuse and reinstalled it and the system came back on line.

What could have caused this and will it be a continuing problem?

Answer
Hi Lee,

This is one of those things that can be a nightmare to diagnose -- even for a licensed mechanic.

What's happening here, is that for some reason, your car is still providing 12V to the switched power wire on your deck.  If you haven't touched anything, then there's a number of reasons this could have happened.

I'll start with the most likely, and work down to the least.

#1: A wire has shorted somewhere.  Two wires are now touching that weren't before, either their sheaths have been worn away, or have corroded, or some tape came off or something.

#2: The deck has failed.  Its internal circuitry has a relay that's sticking and telling the deck it's still on when it's not.

#3: Something in your ignition system has gone haywire and isn't properly flipping the switch to tell the deck to turn off.

The best I can help with at this point is to say: start digging.
