Car Stereos: replacement speakers, alpine head unit, factory speakers

Question
I have a 2001 silverado. I have an alpine head unit I was thinking of installing. What would be the best speakers to add to this? factory is 2 4x6 rear door, 2 6 1/2 in front door and also 2 separate tweeters in the door.  I dont want to install an amp or sub or anything else, just do a deck and speaker swap. My problem is I have no idea what the difference in dual cone, 2 way, or 3 way is. what type speaker will sound best, are they just unplug and plug the new ones in, and if I install aftermarket speakers do I just disconnect the factory stock tweeters. Thanks

Answer
Hi Lee,

For the fronts, you'll want a set of 6 1/2" COMPONENT speakers.  These are speakers that come with separate tweeters (and sometimes a crossover).  You'd use these to replace your front speakers and tweeters.

For your rears, you will want a set of regular 4x6 speakers.  Whether you want 2 or 3 way speakers will come down to your budget and preference.  I suggest visiting your local car audio shop and listening to a bunch of speakers they have in your price range, then buying what you like.  I can't give you a specific model or brand because that would be like me telling you Toyotas are the best cars.  I might think so, but they may not be at all what you're looking for.  What kind of speaker you want can depend upon your preferred volume, music type, budget, etc.

As for hooking them up, you can simply swap them in.  The only issue you'll have is that the car will have a clip that clips into the factory speakers and the new speakers will just have 2 speaker connections.  Your options are to cut off the factory clip, or buy a factory clip adapter.

I hope this helps,
Justin
