Car Stereos: Headphone jack in a car, internal amplifier, headphone jack

Question
I just read an answer about installing a headphone jack in a car, but it was for an after market system.

I want to install, or have installed, a cut-out headphone jack on the dash that would be attached to the front speakers.  If I use the fader to full front, then plug in the headphones, the only sound should be in the headphones.

The car is a 2003 Toyota Corolla with factory sound.

Is this possible?  What parts need to be used?  What would be the wiring?

Thanks,
Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

It doesn't really work that way -- you can't just tap the speakers and use headphones.  The impedance would be all wrong, and at best, make the factory deck turn itself off, and at worst, blow the factory deck's internal amplifier up.

You'd either need some sort of converter (search for headphone adapter's on google), or to use an aftermarket unit that supports it.

Keep in mind, in many jurisdictions, it's illegal to drive with headphones in.  (And even where it's not illegal, it's very unsafe.)  I don't imagine that's what you're aiming to do, but it's worth mentioning.
