Car Stereos: 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport front speaker problem, jeep dealer, jeep liberty

Question
QUESTION: My son has a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport edition with an Infinity stereo system and one of the front speakers sounds like it has a "tear" in it and when any sort of bass is applied it sounds like the speaker cone is loose. I bought a brand new speaker thinking the amp my be bad but it still have the problem. Now here's the kicker, if I connect a rear speaker (w/no amp) it sounds fine!
Any ideas what might be wrong? I would just get another rear speaker w/o the amp but I already have a brand new front speaker that was special ordered thru Jeep that cannot be returned.
Any help would be appreciated.

ANSWER: Hi Jon,

My guess is that the issue is coming from the wiring, or from the deck itself.

The reason you wouldn't heart it on an unamplified signal is because the speaker might have built in capacitors to block out certain frequencies that the weird sound happens in, or because the amplification process in the amplified speaker is amplifying an issue that's much less prevalent in the signal.

If the speaker works at full volume in the front, then I'm a little confused, because if the speakers are amplified, then it makes me wonder why there's a high level input passing to them in the first place.

Have you checked the other door to make sure that it has the same type of speaker?  I might sound crazy, but I can't help but wonder if maybe the speaker that was in there wasn't supposed to be, and your issue stems from trying to amplify an already amplified signal.

QUESTION: Yes I have checked the driver side speaker (which is working fine) and it is the same as the new one I bought for the passenger side (from the Jeep dealer). I swapped the new speaker to the driver's side and it worked fine and swapped the driver's side speaker to the passenger side and it exhibits the same issue so it must either be the wiring or the deck.
Should I measure the input to the front speakers (either before or after the amplifier) on both sides and verify they are same?

Answer
Hi Jon,

Your next bet then, is going to have to be to inspect the wiring for each speaker from where it leaves the rear of the deck up to the speaker.  First thing I'd do is unplug the harness, and test the impedance across the wires.  There should be 1 ohm maximum impedance between each end of the wire.  If it's greater, you need to find the break/short, or replace the wire entirely.
