Car Stereos: trouble with stereo, toyota celica, car wont start

Question
my son installed a new stereo in his 2001 toyota celica gt,now the car wont start what could be the problem

Answer
Hi Phoebe,

This has probably become more of a car fixing issue rather than car stereo, but there are a few things that could have done this.

First, is that something was hooked up incorrectly, and fried the main fuse/link in the car before the radio's fuse popped.

Another is that some wires were installed in the wrong place, and the battery has been drained even when the stereo was off.

The short answer is to remove the stereo that's been installed, check the fuses, and see if it starts without it in there (after the battery's been boosted if it's dead).

Work out from there.  Hopefully he used a harness and didn't cut the factory harness; that's a giant no-no.
