Car Stereos: speaker grill on 1983 Mercedes 380SL, speaker grills, small screws

Question
I was able to remove one of the front speaker grills on a 1983 Mercedes 380SL (Chassis 107) by first removing two small screws at the base of the grill and then wiggling the grill until it came free.  At that point, I discovered two spring clips that attach to the grill and apparently hook over a flat bar attached to the top of the speaker.  Now I cannot figure out how to reattach the clips to the bar in order to reinstall the grill.  Nothing was changed on the speaker assembly so all parts are in their original position.  To get the clips in the vicinity of the bar leaves no space to manipulate the clips and not even enough space to see the clips under the grill.  Can you help?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Sorry about the delay in answering your question.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can offer much help--I've never personally worked on a car like yours, and I can't find much information on it.

I'm wondering how the speaker itself is mounted.  Is it possible that you can remove the speaker, re-attach the grill, then mount the speaker back into position?

If that doesn't help, you might try asking your question on one of the forums dedicated to owners of older Mercedes' like yours.

Sorry I can't be more helpful!
