Car Stereos: cut rear speaker wires on a 2001 grand am, factory speakers, 6x9 speakers

Question
I just bought a 2001 grand am with a monsoon stereo. The back speaker wires are cut with 4 wires hanging on each side. Do I need some special plugin to reattach or are their pictures of the wiring anywere?

Answer
Hi Dave,

The Monsoon system is unusual, because it uses rear speakers that are really two speakers in one.  The Monsoon amplifier has separate outputs for the woofer and the tweeter, and they're wired separately on each 6x9" speaker assembly.  This can be a problem if you're installing after-market replacements, because most after-market 6x9" speakers won't have separate terminals for the woofer and tweeter.

If you're trying to re-connect the original factory speakers, and you don't have the plugs, your best bet is to obtain some new plugs from a junkyard.  Monsoon-equipped Grand Am's are pretty common, so the plugs shouldn't be too hard to find.  If you're trying to install new after-market speakers, let me know, and I can give you some ideas for connecting them to the stock wires.

Here are the rear speaker wire color codes:

Left speaker:

Tweeter (+) red
Tweeter (-) violet
Woofer  (+) blue/white
Woofer  (-) green/black

Right speaker:

Tweeter (+) white
Tweeter (-) yellow
Woofer  (+) green
Woofer  (-) blue/black

Hope this helps!
