Car Stereos: Amp location for 2006 Chevy Silverado, gm pickups, screw size

Question
I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado crew cab. I'm installing a box with 2 10" subs in it that takes up the entire area under the back seat. I am trying to find a location to put an amp. I was thinking under the passenger seat, but considering other locations. What size amp will fit under my seat or is there other locations that you would reccomend? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Derek,

I don't know exactly how much space you have under your front seats, so I can't really recommend anything there.  I've seen a few different under-seat subwoofer boxes for the GM pickups; some of them are designed with a space for the amplifier mount.  If your box doesn't have that feature, then you might check for a space behind the back of the rear seat.  If the seat folds down, or can be removed, then there should be space available to mount an amplifier on the rear wall of the truck, behind the seat.

If the space is available, the easiest mounting method would be to drive the mounting screws right through the rear wall.  Of course, there's an obvious disadvantage to this plan.  A better option is to get a small piece of 1/2" to 3/4" plywood or MDF.  You can pull the liner away from the rear wall and slip the plywood underneath.  Usually I'll mount the piece of wood using metal brackets fastened to the floorboard at the bottom, and to the support brace that runs across the rear of the cabin, under the rear window, at the top.  Another option is to secure the wood piece to the rear wall with a heavy-duty adhesive.  Then you can mount the amplifier by driving screws through the rear wall carpet, into the wood.  If you use the right screw size, you won't have screw ends poking out the back of your truck's cab.

Hope this helps!
