Car Stereos: recommended amplipher, jl subs, jl subwoofers

Question
QUESTION: Hi there i have a 98'expedition xlt it came with a pioneer AVH-P6600DVD head unit, i would like to know what type of amp would be a good match to run my 2 JL audio 12" subs which are in separate
sealed enclosures. I also think the deck draws a lot of power from the battery is it recommended to use a capacitor for this setup,i would like to add that this site looks very promising, i am glad i stumbled across it thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Dan,

Unfortunately, I can't answer your question without knowing more about your JL subwoofers.  JL Audio has made quite a few different 12" subs over the years, and their impedance and power requirements vary.  You might want to take a sub out of the box and see if there's a model number, impedance or power rating printed on the magnet.

While adding a capacitor never hurts, I haven't found that they usually make an audible difference with a subwoofer amplifier.  I wouldn't recommend purchasing one for the system you've described.

If you're able to find more information about your subs, feel free to submit a follow-up question, and I'll try to help you find an amplifier.

QUESTION: hi brain thanks for the speedy answer although i think i asked my question incorrectly, what i wanted to know is what type of amp would be best to run from a pioneer AVH-P6600DVD deck, mono or 2 channel i can run my subs mono if its suits the deck or would a 2 channel be just as good not sure of the pros and cons (the JL subs i believe are 07's and a few years old, but not 100% on that my truck is in the shop so i cant really check right now)

Answer
Hi Dan,

Sorry if I misunderstood your first question.  The fact is, the head unit really isn't relevant to the choice of an amplifier.  You'll want to match your new amp to the subs, not the deck--you'd use the same type of amp no matter what head unit you have.  That's why I can't give you an amplifier recommendation without knowing more about the subs.  Usually, a mono amplifier is the best choice for running subwoofers, but there are a few cases where a 2-channel amp might work better; and the output power is completely dependent on the subwoofers' power rating.

Again, feel free to send a follow-up or a new question when you have a chance to look at the subs, and I'll be glad to give you more help if I can.
