Car Stereos: boston accoustics sound system, dodge magnum rt, boston accoustics

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT w/ the Boston Accoustics sound system.  I am not very happy with the sound from them.  Is it ok to replace them w/ some aftermarket 6x9's, or are they going to sound funny because of the Boston Accoustics Amp?

ANSWER: Brian,  It is perfectly ok to replace the speakers.  The amps aren't smart enough to know which speakers are hooked up... yet.  Anyways, I have to agree with you.  Those speakers are not the best sounding.  You  should have no problems replacing them for a better sound.  Hope this helps, Scott

QUESTION: As a follow up to my previous question, my buddy has some brand new Alpine 6X9's, are those going to produce better sound than the stock BA speakers?

Answer
Alpine, BA, Polk, etc, many of these are listener preference.  There are some with noticeably better clarity, such as Infinity and MB Quart.  I would recommend going to your local stereo shop and listening closely to what they have to offer.  Keep the headunit and amplification the same, and just change the speakers.  There are certain things to listen for that will make your choice easier.  First, listen for a drum solo.  You should hear every beat of the drum.  Cheaper speakers will blend the drum beats together.  Second, listen for some cymbals.  Cymbals should sound clear and crisp.  Cheaper speakers will make the cymbals just sound like an annoying hiss.  A good song to check with is VanHalen's "Hot for Teacher".  Right at the beginning is an awesome drum solo and cymbal strikes.  Good Luck, Scott
