Car Stereos: Double din in a 2001 GMC Sierra, double din head unit, gmc sierra

Question
I am looking to place a Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD in my 2001 GMC Sierra, but I don't know exactly what I am in for. First off, is it possible and if so, how hard/costly will it be. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Brandon,

Sorry about the delay in answering this question.

It's possible to install a double-DIN head unit like the AVH-P4100DVD into a 2001 Sierra, but it might be difficult to make it look good.  The factory head unit size is 1.5-DIN.  There's enough room in the radio cavity to fit a double-DIN head unit chassis--it's a tight squeeze, and you might have to do some minor cutting in the rear of the cavity, but it can be made to fit.  You'll need to fabricate some sort of mounting bracket to hold the head unit in place, but that won't be too difficult either.

The trouble is the front dash bezel, which doesn't have a large enough cutout for the double-DIN faceplate.  You'll need to enlarge the opening in the dash panel, but it will be tricky to end up with a finished appearance.

If you live in an area where these trucks are popular, I'd suggest talking to some local car audio shops.  The vehicle is very common, and there are a lot of owners who'd like to upgrade the stock head unit to a double-DIN; so it's possible that one of the local shops has some experience with this type of upgrade.

Hope this helps!
