Car Stereos: car audio, rubber grommet, chevy camaro

Question
Hi Brian I have a 1998 chevy camaro and am looking to run a power wire from the battery to an amplifier in the trunk. What would be the best way to run that wire through the firewall.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Brandon,

I apologize for the long delay in answering your question.

Unfortunately, I don't recall the engine compartment and battery position in the Camaro.  In just about all GM vehicles, there's a large rubber grommet under the driver's side dash, which carries a large wire bundle between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment.  Usually you can run your power wire through this same grommet, by punching a hole in the grommet and pushing your power wire through.  If the battery's on the driver's side, this would be ideal; if it's on the passenger side, you can still use a driver's side grommet, but you'll have to use extra wire running across the engine bay.  Be sure to avoid placing the wire near any hot or moving parts in the engine compartment, and don't forget to install a fuse holder close to the battery connection.

You should be able to remove the plastic sill panel that runs along the bottom of the driver's-side or passenger-side door opening.  With the sill panel removed, you can push the power wire under the edge of the carpet to keep the wire hidden all the way back to the trunk.  You'll also need to remove lower part of the back seat so you can run the wire under the seat into the cargo area.

Sorry again about the wait; hopefully this arrives in time to do you some good.

Brian
