Car Stereos: No Sound on CD Player, jeep grand cherokee, sony xplod

Question
I just installed a Sony Xplod CDX-GT300 into a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, the radio plays great but a cd  has no sound, the player shows that it is playing the cd, but i can't hear anything, I know it works because i had it hooked up in my old car before. What could cause this to happen???

Answer
Hi Liz,

This is an extremely common problem with Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles equipped with Infinity factory audio systems.

Here's what's going on:  your Grand Cherokee is equipped with a factory amplifier, which run all six speakers.  When you're installing a new head unit, you need to connect a wire in the radio harness that activates the factory amplifier.  If the amplifier is activated, you get sound; no activation, no sound.

I'm assuming you're using a wire harness adapter to connect the Sony deck to the factory radio plugs.  If so, the blue wire in the adapter harness is the one that connects to the factory amplifier's activation wire.  I'm sure you connected this to the blue wire in the Sony plug, and that's the problem.  The Sony plug's blue wire is a power antenna output; it's only activating the amplifier when you have "Tuner" selected as a source.  When you switch to another source, the blue wire turns off, and so does the factory amplifier.

The solution is to disconnect the blue wire in the adapter harness from the blue wire in the Sony plug, and connect it to the blue/white wire in the Sony plug instead.  The blue/white wire is the true amplifier remote wire, and will keep the factory amp working whenever the head unit is switched on.

Hope this helps!
